FAQs

 What does Sea Forest do?

Sea Forest is an environmental technology company based in Tasmania, Australia cultivating seaweed and producing solutions to climate change.
Founded by Sam Elsom and Stephen Turner in 2018, Sea Forest is creating a solution to climate change through the feeding of its novel seaweed as a supplement to cattle and sheep to virtually eliminate methane emissions from livestock production.

Are methane emissions really a problem for our planet?

Methane is one of the largest contributors to greenhouse gas emissions, second only to the generation of electricity. It has 28 times the warming effect of CO2 in the atmosphere.

Livestock’s contribution to methane gas emission is around 24% which represents 14.5% of all global greenhouse gas emissions — more than the entire global transportation sector.

What is Asparagopsis?

Asparagopsis is a genus of edible red algae and is native to the pristine waters of Australia. Through photosynthesis, it captures carbon from the atmosphere which makes up 40% of its biomass.

What makes Asparagopsis so incredible?

Asparagopsis has a unique chemistry as it contains approx. 120 bioactive compounds held in gland cells inside the seaweed. These organic compounds react with two key enzymes in the final stage of digestion inhibiting the production of methane and virtually eliminating methane emissions from livestock.

Asparagopsis also increases productivity through improved feed efficiency. This is because 20% of the animal’s energy is lost in converting food into methane, therefore significantly less food is needed to grow livestock. Asparagopsis is also a gamechanger for oceans as it de-acidifes the water, stripping out the carbon dioxide.

Do you grow Asparagopsis commercially?

Sea Forest is the first in the world to cultivate Asparagopsis at a commercial scale through both marine and land-based aquaculture. Sea Forest is currently the world’s largest producer of Asparagopsis in the $11 billion seaweed market.
